Ghana’s Journey to a Cashless Society: not far from being achieved-MTN Mobile Money Boss


The Senior Commercial Manager of MTN Mobile Money Services, Mr. Eli Hini has opined that the distance between the dream of the Ghana’s cashless economy and its transformation into a reality is just a matter of few miles away. He said “ Though much has been said about the introduction of a cashless society in Ghana but even the Central Bank doubt it, questioning its feasibility in recent times, claiming it can only be a thing of the future and believing it can only be termed as a cash light society but not cashless” he hinted.

Drawing an inspiration with reference to the success story of Kenya’s economy in leading the mobile money services platform in Africa with over 20 million subscribers on board so far, Mr. Hini was optimistic that Ghanaians will soon behold the realization of the cashless society a success through the latest introduction of MTN Ghana’s “Pay School fees straight from your mobile phone” and other initiatives to be introduced in the future by MTN.


He made this remark at an event to launch “Pay School fees straight from your mobile phone” the latest mobile money driven technology innovation of MTN, Ghana’s giant telecom operator.

The “Pay School fees straight from your mobile phone” according to the MTN’s Sales and Distribution Executive officer, Mr. Eric Nsarkoh was geared towards satisfying the growing demand for convenient payment options for school fees and also seeks to give parents the ease and convenience of paying their wards fees from the comfort of their homes and offices without any hassle.

He noted the initiative was also aimed at providing schools with a reliable platform to be able to monitor all transactions that have been made and also ensure that the funds settled at their preferred bank account for easy reconciliation.

He was equally optimistic that the future of mobile money in Ghana is bright and confident that the Ghana’s quest to achieve a cashless society is within reach as MTN is focused on its objective of making Mobile Money the leading mode of payments in Ghana.

According to him, all customers can subscribe to the program by first registering with the MTN Mobile money platform and then follow the steps below to enjoy the program:

  1. Go to Mobile Money on their handsets
  2. Go to Pay Bill
  3. Select School Fees
  • Under Payment code, enter the School code followed by a space and the student ID number(e.g. UG 10000408)
  • Enter your MM Pin(Names of student will be displayed)
  1. Click Pay now
  2. Enter a suitable Reference(e.g. 2nd Term/Semester)
  3. Enter amount
  4. Confirm payment details
  5. Enter your MM PIN again

An SMS will be sent as a confirmation of a successful payment.

The Headmaster of the Accra Academy School, Mr. Samuel Ofori -Adjei described the “pay school fees straight from your mobile phone” program as a cheaper, safer and more convenient way of paying school fees and transferring money for business purposes and urge parents to make good use of it for their own good instead of queuing in banks in the name of paying school fees of their wards.

To kick start the Pay School fees straight from your mobile phone program already operational but being launched today, September 9, 2014, thirty (30) Senior High Schools and three(3) tertiary institutions have enrolled unto the platform. It is the hope of MTN that a lot more activity will be seen on the school fees platform.

Meanwhile, a special promotion dubbed “Back to school Promo” will be rolled out to reward wards of parents who pay their fees through the platform with school bags, exercise books, pens, printers as well as  lot of goodies  adding to that,  the promo will also reward 3 Senior high schools for signing on and promoting the service.
