Ghana joins the world to mark 2017 Universal Health Coverage Day with high-level community durbar
Some Ghanaians have joined the world to mark this year’s Universal Health Coverage Day(UHC) with a high-level community durbar to influence and demand support from government to make primary healthcare accessible to all without any unnecessary financial strings attached.
The meeting was held at Abokobi in Accra on Tuesday December 12, 2017.
It provided the platform for discussions and demonstration on primary health care and health financing issues.
At the durbar, various speakers who took turns to address participants, sensitized them on the significance of day including how to ensure that people have access to the healthcare they need without suffering financial hardship.
According to Mr. Joseph Senyo Kwashie, Executive Director of Community and Family Aid Foundation(CAFAF), the general goal of organizing the event is to increase universal health coverage awareness by advocating for stakeholders support and influencing for improved primary health care and financing for health to addressing gaps in the country.
This year’s celebration is on the theme: Equitable Access to Primary Health Care and Financing In Ghana Stepping Into Action In Pursuit Of Agenda 2030
Commemorating this year’s day is touted historical as similar event is being held on the International level where thousands of global leaders converged in Japan from 12th-15th December, 2017 to take critical decisions on universal health coverage, and millions of people and organizations undertake different activities to highlights issues on universal health coverage.
Universal Health Coverage Day is celebrated annually on December 12 and is promoted by the World Health Organization.
The day was first celebrated in December 12, 2012 when the United Nations unanimously endorsed a historic resolution urging all countries to accelerate progress toward universal health coverage as an essential priority for international development.
With the global agenda to create a movement for accelerating equitable and sustainable progress towards universal health coverage (UHC), the United Nations and it allies are bent on making the world become a better place for all devoid of sickness and anything that limits humans from getting access to healthcare delivery by 2030.
Universal Health Coverage Day (UHC) Day has become the annual rallying point for the growing global movement for health for all. Each year on 12.12, masses of people in various countries gather to raise their voices to share the stories of the millions of people still waiting for health, to call on leaders to make bigger and smarter investments in health, and to remind the world that health for all is imperative for the world we want.
The event was jointly organized by the Community and Family Aid Foundation, Rural project support network, Ghana Coalition of NGO’S in Health,Work Partnership International including other stakeholders in the country.
In attendance were over 250 participants made up of health personnel,traditional authorities, health service providers,decision makers, speakers ,facilitators, and other invited guests.
